Should you rinse after brushing with hydroxyapatite toothpaste?

Should you rinse after brushing with hydroxyapatite toothpaste?

By Alexandra Baker

Short answer: no. Brush for two minutes, spit out the extra, and leave the rest on your teeth. Then try not to eat or drink for about 30 minutes.

That's the whole ritual. Here's why it matters.

Why rinsing works against you

Most of us were taught to finish brushing with a big mouthful of water. It feels clean. It also washes away most of what you just put on your teeth.

Dental public health advice has said "spit, don't rinse" for years. The UK's Delivering Better Oral Health guidance puts it plainly: spit out after brushing, do not rinse. That advice was written for fluoride toothpaste, but the logic holds for any toothpaste whose active ingredient works at the surface of your teeth. The longer it stays there, the more time it has to work.

What nano hydroxyapatite is doing on your teeth

About 97% of your enamel is one mineral: hydroxyapatite. Nano hydroxyapatite (nHA) is a lab made version of that same mineral, in particles small enough to settle into the tiny gaps on the surface of your enamel. In Bastét, those particles are rod shaped and around 20 nanometres.

Every day, acids from food and bacteria pull a little mineral out of your enamel, and your saliva helps put some back. nHA helps support that mineral layer by giving your teeth more of what they are already made of. That takes contact time. A rinse cuts it short.

How to brush with nano hydroxyapatite toothpaste

  1. Brush for two full minutes. Reach every surface, including along the gumline.
  2. Spit out the extra. Bastét has a subtle foam, so there is less to spit.
  3. Don't rinse. The taste fades within a few minutes.
  4. Wait about 30 minutes before eating or drinking. This gives the nHA undisturbed time on your teeth.
  5. Make your night brush count most. Saliva slows down while you sleep, so what you leave on your teeth before bed stays there longer.

What if you really can't skip the rinse?

Your toothpaste still helps. You just get less contact time. A few ways to meet it halfway:

  • Use a small sip of water instead of a full mouthful.
  • Skip the rinse at night, even if you rinse in the morning.
  • Give it a week. Most people stop missing the rinse once the habit sets in.

Can you use mouthwash after nano hydroxyapatite toothpaste?

Not right after. Mouthwash rinses toothpaste off your teeth the same way water does. Use it at a different time of day, like after lunch, so it adds to your routine instead of undoing it.

Is it okay to leave toothpaste on your teeth?

Yes, that's the point. A thin film stays behind and you spit out the rest. You will swallow a trace, as you do with any toothpaste you don't rinse. Hydroxyapatite is the same mineral already found in your teeth and bones. For children, use a pea sized amount and supervise brushing, and ask your dentist if you have questions.
